Building an SEO strategy for Vox Magazine

As part of a student consultant group for Vox Magazine in 2022, I developed an SEO and content strategy for Vox Magazine, Columbia’s local arts and culture magazine, to help drive traffic around the Roots ‘N Blues music festival.

The magazine was very focused on their print edition. They weren’t thinking about stories for a digital audience or ways to best optimize those stories for search, even though they did lots of in-depth coverage of the event. They did not use hyperlinks or headings and did not brainstorm coverage based on what people were searching for online.

Our proposal was focused on generating new story ideas and teaching new techniques to help their coverage rank better. We taught them how to use Google Trends to find story ideas and optimize headlines, the ranking of SEO fields at the time and how they can incorporate SEO best practices into their workflow. We provided examples of the ways this story could have been adjusted to better reach a digital audience. The newsroom used this advice to help plan their coverage and production for next year’s festival and other major events happening in Columbia.
